Actually what is being discussed is you booking for and (wait for it) paying for Thursday and Friday night. If you then check out on Friday morning that wouldn't matter as you have already paid for Friday night (no revenue loss to the hotel). You still come out ahead as you pay $178 instead of $289. Most hotels will charge by the night so even if you book for multiple nights they will show you different rates for different nights based on what the hotel is willing to price the room for.
This is a comparable statement to hidden city ticketing imo.. If you paid for something and choose not to use it.. how can you be asked to pay more?
