It sounds like the US website has only 1 ticket to sell at the lower price, and auto-defaults to the next higher fare class for all of you.
Have you tried looking at other sites (e.g. Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity) or even the UA website for the same US metal flights? Sometimes they have not exhausted their supply of lower-fare tickets to sell. Worth a shot.
