Child on Separate Ticket but Traveling with Adult

I am booking a multicity trip for myself and my children for December on US Air. If I try to reserve for the all of us, the fare is $60 more per flyer than when I look up the fare for just one. So ideally I would book under two reservations to save a little money. But the problem is that US Air won't let me book connecting flights for the minors as the system thinks they will be unaccompanied. Anyone know of a workaround? (As another example- what would happen if an adult booked a ticket and later decided to take a child with them? how would you book the ticket just for the child?) I can't try to fool the system and call them an adult because it now requires birth dates.
