This is no longer the case at major hubs. It still exists at smaller airports--the red carpet for 1k--but at major hubs, it's now "priority boarding". This means that the 1K's get on at the same time as premiers (25k/year) and people who pay for priority boarding. 1K's do not get to board before premier anymore; you're all lumped into one big cattle pen.
This also applies to the security line. Anybody whose been to the priority security line at SFO knows what a zoo it is. It took me 30 minutes once to get through that line. It's because everybody is lumped in together now; 1K's are no longer separated out.
