Advise Your US Bank Prior to Travel ?

I've travelled pretty much all over the world, used my credit cards for purchases, ATM's to get local currencies etc-- no problem. I'm going down to CUN next month, and noticed an advisory on one of the Trip Advisor forums that I should notify my local US bank and/or credit card company that I will be using my card overseas ?? Never heard of that-- is this just for Mexico ? I'll be gone only one day, and planned to take about $100 US to change in pesos when I arrive at CUN for incidentials. Is this real, or are they being just overly cautious
