The weekend of Mar. 31/Apr. 1, 2012 is the start of Holy Week (Semana Santa) and will be a very busy travel weekend out of both of Costa Rica's international airports. Award availability may be pretty scarce for that reason. That's probably why you saw the spike in fares for that weekend.
