If AMEX can't/won't take your $ you can ask them to release the ticket. If they won't/don't do that you can keep calling back AMEX Travel and then UA until you get an agent that will cooperate. I got a UA agent to just yank it from AMEX unilaterally and do the buy up.

Be persistent and if you don't like the answer, thank them, hang up and try again.
