I've never actually ticketed a flight that way, but AA agents have told me that the domestic portion of a CX award ticket is treated like a domestic award ticket. That means you can do the free stopover anywhere you want, not necessarily at the gateway city.

That's what I was told about 18 months ago, and it may not be entirely accurate. Check with AA after you decide on an itinierary.
