I believe the revenue passenger would clear first and be assigned the middle and then the non-rev would clear and get the EML.

It turned out that most EMS seats were occupied. I had my open seat, but wondering if there's a way to maximize the chances of that.
Buy it. Otherwise expect that it will be occupied. Load factors are running north of 80% these days; an empty seat next to you is unlikely in general.
