Does anyone happen to know, when B6 must assign EMS seats to pax because only those seats are left, how they go about doing so?

I just took a flight where a day before, the vast majority of EMS seats were available. I picked an exit row, partly for the legroom, partly for the decent chance at an open middle (every non-EMS seat was taken); $25 for 3.5 hours was a good deal.

It turned out that most EMS seats were occupied. I had my open seat, but wondering if there's a way to maximize the chances of that.
