San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina is one of my all-time favorite Marriotts. I have also read a lot of good things about the Marriott Gaslamp which is just across the street from the Marquis. Had some great upgrades here as a Platinum. Both Marquis and Gaslamp are close to Petco park in case the Padres are in town and you are a baseball fan.
Plus that about the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina. Just got back from my 3rd stay there, 3 for 3 in PLT Upgrades (ask nicely in advance) and its steps away from the Gaslamp Marriott and Gaslamp touristy area.
Its just pricey and geared up to take advantage of the convention crowd ($9 drinks, $6 to RECEIVE a package - wasn't even delivered to my room or told it was waiting, had to ask for it).
Huge but not overwhelming, Lounge decent, not great, elevator waiting / stopping can be a pain at times.
I was there in the blackout last week, the "don't panic" announcements were funny and they did a decent job trying to feed everyone by BBQ....
