(update) Do DCA cabs take Credit Cards? Reply to Thread
This thread hasn't had a post for awhile and I took the time so ask my driver about DC cabs and credit cards on a ride today.
My question: "Why do I always get an irritated driver who doesn't want to take my credit card even when they have a machine and I asked for a cab that takes a credit card when departing from Reagan National Airport."
Answer: "When you pay with a credit card they have to charge a $3 fee."
So, offer to pay the $3 fee up front. They don't all speak English very well and may just be trying to save you some money by paying cash but can come across as not wanting to take your credit card.
My question: "What about in the city? I get resistance there too."
Answer: Cab companies require drivers to carry the costs of buying the CC processing equipment and a portion of the transaction fees. I can't make enough money to justify it and I stopped taking CCs."
My question: "Where is this headed?"
Answer: "Universal credit card acceptance is coming."
Prognosis: Always ask before you take a cab-ask the cab flagger AND the driver. If they agree to take a CC, you're probably ok. If you don't ask, don't be surprised if they push you for cash or don't take a CC. Expect to take a ride to the ATM for the latter. Taxi fares are determined by the city. Additional fees to cover paying for fares by CC are not allowed. The CC fees (generally 2-3% but some rewards cards can be even higher) are absorbed by either the cab company or the drivers depending on the company.
Personally: I don't use taxis for my normal commuting--just not an option. I think it's a tough job and appreciate a driver with a relaxed and friendly attitude. I like to tip generously for a good ride and a helpful driver. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for the ability to pay by CC with actual receipt. I might start offering a larger tip up front when I ask if they take a CC to take the edge off.
