Since you're planning to cancel the original ticket anyway, it wouldn't hurt to call the airline and explain the situation. While everything in this thread is correct as far as the rules are written, airlines are sometimes flexible in cases of bereavement. They may offer you a break, and it can't hurt to ask. If they say no, then just cancel and pay the fee.
