Call them 16 hours before your trip and say your flight is delayed and you won't be able to make it for the first nights reservation and you should be able to have the first nights charge not count against you (I have done this because my flight delayed me before and IHG was very cool about it thankfully)

It is not New Years or a special day... maybe the hotel is booked for a conference or wedding.
