Why do people try to take guitars on a plane? They clearly do not fit into the thing provided and the gate to see if it will fit. I understand it can be an expensive instrument, but here's my take: Pad the living crap out of it, and check it. Seriously. I don't try to carryon my $4,000 bike, which is just as chipable, breakable, and nearly as light as your guitar.

Everytime I see an instrument in an overhead bin, I try to make my carryon fit with it.

If your bike is as breakable as an acoustic guitar then you've got a really crappy bike. Strength of alum/steel/titanium/carbon fiber, etc. > 1/4 inch thick maple-top accoustic.

Temperture/humidity levels can be an issue for guitars, much more so with acoustics than electrics. That said, the primary reason I wouldn't check my guitars is b/c of baggage (mis)handling issues. And, at a minimum, I'd only trust my gear being shipped in ATA cases (read: heavy/bulky/expensive). For me @ least, it's usually much easier to rent/borrow at my destination than to bring with on a flight.
