In one restaurant in Kensington they added a 12% service charge on and when the waiter brought the bill he said "service not included". When I said that 12% had been added to the bill he said "we don't get that". I explained that unfortunately that wasn't my problem but I wasn't tipping twice.
If the service charge added to the bill is optional (as is in many restaurants) you don't have to pay! Insist on having the charge removed and tip the amount in cash.
