I imagine that not allowing the return changes
and confiscating the miles would lead to a nightmare scenario where mom, dad and 4 kids who arrive at the airport on the wrong day are standing in CDG with no more miles in their account and without the ability to pay the $10K to get back to the US. On the outbound, there's no chance of being stranded and they can point to an existing rule (331 days after 081511). Extreme disappointment and anger on the outbound, fiscal ruination on the return.
