With UA/CO, I've been able to book something like LHR - JFK - YYZ, then drop JFK - YYZ a day or so later; keeping the LHR - JFK portion (and paying a change fee if applicable).

Anyone have experience doing that with AA?

Thanks.
You are doing this all wrong.........

Use the free stopover at JFK, and fly JFK-<somewhere> days or months later for a free one way award I just flew BKK-HKG-SFO on a first class award. I live in the Bay Area.... continuing on this same one way award, I will fly SFO-MIA-SJU in first class in February. Then, I will book a SJU-XXX-SFO award that continues to somewhere else later.
