I fly with Asiana a lot because of their great service, but their service booking tickets isn't so great and easy. First of all, there are a lot of black out dates and they suggest you be put on a waiting list and call every couple days if it is full. They reserve a very small portion for non-revenue flights. You cannot book online and have to call their office.
I have the Bank of America cc and have racked up over 200,000 points in the past year. November of last year I booked an economy flight from Los Angeles to Phnom Penh roundtrip with no problem, 85,000 points and I just cover the taxes. LAX > ICN > PNH. Last month I booked a business class round trip LAX>ICN>PNH with no problem for November of this year. 125,000 miles and I just cover the taxes. My flight got confirmed and everything is good.
The problem now starts when i call in and try to upgrade to first class. First class flight round trip is 170,000 miles. I call the Los Angeles office and get the flight confirmed. A few hours later, the agent called me back saying that I will need an additional 75,000 miles and not 45,000. I explained to her I needed 45,000 more because I booked business at 125,000 + 45,000 extra = 170,000 first class. The agent said because ICN to PNH only offers business class, they have to grab my miles separately. First class LAX >ICN 140,000, business class ICN > PNH 60,000 miles. I explained to her I am booking a flight from LAX > PNH and I have to do a stopover in Korea, there is no choice, and if there is no first class from ICN > PNH then I get put in business class. I keep explaining to the agent to look at the chart. I am flying from USA to SE Asia which clearly states 170,000. However, it is not getting through the head of her team so I leave it as it
Later that evening I call Asiana office in Korea to get the flight confirmed again. Agent in Korea said its 170,000 miles and that I need only 45,000 more and to call the USA office the next morning to deduct the miles. She would have not confirmed my flight if I didn't have enough miles. This morning I called the Los Angeles office and they said they are looking at my case and they are checking the Asiana in Korea the proper miles needed. Have anyone also encountered this type of problem? Look at the rate chart below. I am booking 1 ticket from USA > SE Asia. It seems like the USA office is trying to get as many miles from me as possbile and will find any reason to do so.
