I'd say don't put anything of real value in the checked bag. As with always checking a bag, there is a risk. The only consideration is how much time to you have connecting at ORD. If your LGA flight is late you might make the connection but your bags won't. I would try to put at least one days worth of clothing in your checked bags, two days if possible.
I was once told by a AA agent:" if YOU are physically able to make the connection at DFW, MIA and ORD, your bags make it too as they connect faster than humans". Although I found that hard to believe, I have not experienced a single mishap in many many years at those airports.
Now talk about the shameful transfer from AA to AE at Boston, that's a different topic, with constant misses.
