Interesting, i had never even looked at Star awards ... However, i am perplexed, for the NZ to Europe award it says "
New Zealand to Europe: Applies only to journeys between New Zealand and Europe where the sectors flown have the same flight number and are on the same through journey - without stopover. Does that flight even exist? I thought only NZ offered a through flight with the same flight number. Similarly, they say the same thing from Australia, does anyone offer a flight to Europe on the same flight number? One the face of it is a good level to get a business flight for around 2,300 airpoints but it just seems like their clause rules that out.

If the request is made from the GE's account and if you see R2 confirmation is generally immediate in my experience. (Once I was contacted and told there was one seat available (R1) was there and "would I like to upgrade one and have the other pending".)
If the request is made from the partner GE's account, generally you will need to contact Airpoints and ask for confirmation - I have used the Gold.Elite email address for this.
Thanks Serfty, that is very helpful.
