My 14 year old daughter changed her phone for a Blackberry 8520 Curve recently and went for a call and text package with Vodafone - but crucially no data services from Vodafone. She reckoned she would not need data over the phone system but was reassured in the shop when the sales assistant said the wifi would still operate. This suited her needs fine - being a teenager she is on a monthly allowance and reckoned she wouldn't want internet and e-mail access whilst out, but at home would be useful for Facebook etc.
However no attempt to get the wifi working has succeeded, either at home, round a friends house and even back at the shop where it was purchased where a couple of the techies tried to get it working on their wifi.
One shop assistant made a few calls and went on a few Blackberry user forums and it appears to be that Vodafone in the UK don't support wifi on a handset with their contracts....unless the user also has their data package. In other words, my daughter cannot use her BB on any free wifi without having the Vodafone data package - which she doesn't want.
Anyone know if this Vodafone wifi limitation is correct or not? The folks in the shop (including the two who were clearly very techy in their ability to set up the BB configs) said they hadn't heard of it - but did add they rarely (if ever) sell a BB without the data package so that would offer some explanation.
