I seem to recall, back in the 1980's, that BA had a flight to Singapore that stopped in Chennai (Madras back then). TG used to fly LHR-India-Bangkok in the early 90's too...so there have been rights granted as I know people who have flown on the connecting services. UA also used to have their UA1/UA2 round-the-world service via Delhi with continuing service to HKG (the old Pan Am route), and they, too, were permitted 5th freedom traffic.
