Why? Because: 1) attorneys undergo background checks before getting admitted to the bar, so the odds of me being a terrorist are quite slim; and 2) it puts the SPOTnik on notice that he's dealing with someone who knows his rights.
Regarding (1): why should the BDO believe that your business card is authentic? After all, anyone could print up a fairly convincing business card that says "Attorney at Law" on it --- and no amount of examining the card with a magic UV light will reveal otherwise.

Regarding (2): I'm not sure that would make much of a difference. Frankly, as an attorney, I expect that you know your rights far better than the average US citizen --- TSA employees included.
