It is a common theme in Frequent Flyer Land that the best "value" is using the miles to book seats in Business of First class, or using them to upgrade from Premium Economy to Business class etc...
So, I am afraid, if you are looking to use them for economy travel, the fees will be high versus what you could pay outright for a seat to begin with.
It is just a different way that the program operates versus, for example, an American based FF program.
It sure is a different way of operating, and one that does not suit the customer one bit. The fees are totally outrageous and a total con.
I don't know what has happened in Britain since I left two decades ago, but it seems that people in the UK put up with whatever is shoved down their throats these days whether it is train fares, taxes on air tickets to get out of the country or airline mileage fees.
There is no excuse that can be made for BA's pathetic mileage program. On top of this, for years until very recently they gave lousy mileage on coach tickets too. The only possible way to get rid of mileage with this mob is to get AA tickets in the US. No doubt they are looking at ways to dump this too.
No amount of "I am afraids" excuses this situation. What is needed is a mega class action suit against these ripoff merchants. I hope it comes soon and that some nasty set of lawyers sees this as a great way to entertain themselves over the coming few years. And AA should put the squeeze on BA too.
