I highly recommend the book
The Day the World Came to Town.
It shares personal stories about exactly what happened in Gander and how such a seemingly impossible feat was accomplished. There are so many tough memories to deal with on this anniversary, but this book shows people at their very best. There were shower rosters posted in the temporary shelters so locals could take passengers to their own homes to have a shower. The bedding that was handed out in the shelters was donated from locals' own linen closets. Stores gave out goods for free to the "plane people", and many locals welcomed stranded passengers into their homes to stay until the planes left. I highly, highly recommend this book. It's moving, uplifting, and it'll make you want to go to Newfoundland.
