The cheapest coach does not allow you to upgrade to flatbed.
Though I am in agreement with you about the difference between day time flight and night time flight. I have found day time return from Europe the flatbed is a waste for me. I am perfectly fine at AA's Exit Row on a daytime flight back from either CDG or LHR.
