We did book first fully refundable tickets and used our $99 companion fare so I am certain that the cost will be prohibitive to change to another airline. We are hoping that either the schedules change again or that AS can put us on another airline (even if it is in coach) to get us home same-day.
You should carefully check the t&c of your specific tickets on AS. I have never seen one where the carrier obligates itself to put you on another carrier, although it is certainly the carrier's option to do so.
After reading your t&c, call AS. If they have obligated themselves to rebook, including at your option on another carrier, be firm in asking. If it is their option, do not demand but ask and explain the reason, namely the overnight.
Don't hold your breath waiting for "yes" but there is no harm in asking and making your case as
briefly, succinctly and politely as possible.
If it doesn't work, end the call politely and call back.
