I live in Atlanta, and have a chance to get quite a few BA points. However, while the redemption chart seems attractive, the fees seem quite extreme. I've mostly been looking at flights to Europe from Atlanta, so this might be distorting things. I wanted to ask you guys if I am missing something, or just looking at bad routes.

For point of comparison, I'm looking at flights from ATL to LHR on 11/6 and returning 11/20. Everything is economy.

To pay with BA points, the flight is 50k miles, with $559.14 fees.
On Delta with cash, the flight is $932.30 (on BA it is about $50 more).

So those 50k points are worth less than $400, and don't even get you half off.

By contrast, for a Delta reward, it was 60k miles for a reward flight, but just $165.20. (this happened to be a low reward redemption rate, more typical for this route seems to be 90k).
