If there's really a legit technical reason somebody better tell all those vehicles on the I-5 into SAN (Lindberg) to shut off their cell phones too.
I'm a former radio tech and IMO the claimed radio frequency (RF) airplane safety issue is no different than TSA screeners tossing large amounts of "potentially hazardous" liquids into trash bins - then sitting in front of it all day.
IMO - the only genuine safety issue is that they want passenger attention in the event of an emergency. That's enough of a reason for me but why lie and dream things up? I guess it's like the majority of "flying safety theatre" - junk science and fear rule the day.
