I just did a one-way upgrade 2 weeks ago. I don't think they use a one way fare to recalculate. I added only 800 dollars to a 1,100 dollars return Y ticket to India. The total amount for the round trip mixed class booking is 1,900. The round trip business ticket is about 3,000.
