European Airlines never had a policy for "free" upgrades for elite flyers like the US counterparts. Why should they? Their reasoning always was "if you want to sit upfront just pay for it ( cash, miles, certs )". Is there another market somewhere in world that offers free upgrades to elites?
Also, as noted here before the upgrade in europe would be for better service only, not for a better seat.
