See my post #2: because of that "general" rule, the only way I know to avoid a 2nd security screening is to fly a Schengen > Schengen > non-Schengen route. And even then there are exceptions like CDG (basically because they are badly organised) where you have to go through security again.

In practice, arriving from the US in Europe, you will always have to go through security again (unless somebody can give an example of the contrary?).
But you will only have to go through passport control if you arrive in a Schengen country and connect to another Schengen country.
