From Zion NP, I have and you can go to and from the north rim of the Grand Canyon in a day. However, you'll arrive midday, whereas better light for pics is probably morning or evening. Coming back through Zion after dark on a clear and moonless night, I got some great pics of the red rock of the canyon lit by only stars, using a tripod and extended shutter.
