You can't actually "switch" from paid to points. When you book the points room there has to be "standard" availability. Releasing the paid standard room might not necessarily open up a standard room for booking with either money or points. An unusual situation, but it can happen.

If you really want to stay at that property you should book the points room before canceling the paid one.
