As long as CO employees have the capacity to print boarding passes then isn't this one of their basic functions? Whether or not a passenger can print one on their own is therefore irrelevant.
After all, the OP "wasted" a lot less time than your typical elite does checking with the GA for the umpteenth time whether they are on the upgrade list...
