I do know, from traveling to Buffalo at times, that many Canadians seem to cross the border to catch cheaper flts from Buffalo as compared to Canada.

And, as for alternative transport to Montreal from NYC: Amtrak takes about 11 hours. Sheesh.

Personally, I would not recommend Amtrak for crossborder due to potential delays crossing the border. I had a couple of friends who wanted to go to Niagara Falls on the Cdn side (from NYC) and I suggested they get to the US side and cross on their own. They did not heed my advice and had a 3 hour delay (on both sides)!
