Transborder fares are usually more expensive than domestic, but I would suggest a couple of other options
1) fly into Burlington VT or Plattsburgh NY, which are across the border from Montreal (about 60-80 miles/90-120 km). IIRC, Burlington has direct flights, but you will prob have to connect for PBG
2) check out AA or COs weekend saver fares - I have seen the fares drop to a bit if you can do a last minute and over the weekend (return Mon/Tues) option.
