I find it hard to believe that they are not making money on the LAX-PHL flights. Given that LAX is a hub for the combined airline, I agree that a seasonal service is not going to do it. One thinks of an airline for a route, and you can't simply add/substract on what is a business route.
I guess I can see UA/CO's thought process "they will go to EWR" but they will not, EWR is a mess...
The few times I have been on the evening out of PHL recently, they were not full in the back (not empty, though). The few times that I took the redeye out of LAX, they were packed in the back.
I agree that people would rather take US's nonstop or connect before heading to EWR for a nonstop to LAX.
