The rules were as they are today without the 20 segment limit. The same segment limits by continent were in place so there was an overall cap on how many segments you could fly but it increased with the number of continents you ticketed.

Therefore, the maximum for a six continent trip was 32 free segments and you could buy an extra two in five continents for an absolute max of 42 segments. You could add three to either of these figures if you employed the allowed transits in NA, Asia and Europe.
