I find it hard to believe that they are not making money on the LAX-PHL flights. Given that LAX is a hub for the combined airline, I agree that a seasonal service is not going to do it. One thinks of an airline for a route, and you can't simply add/substract on what is a business route.
I guess I can see UA/CO's thought process "they will go to EWR" but they will not, EWR is a mess...
I am always mystified by UA's strategy or lack of it at PHL. They had a golden opportunity a few years ago to reach out to disgruntled US elites, yet at the same time they continued to reduce their schedule out of PHL.
Hey UA! Sponsor a few events here in Philly; put up a few billboards advertising the benefits of flying in E+ to the west coast! They should also try scheduling a few 757s on the SFO to PHL route and see how the loads are.
