Some US states have their own state ID cards. They look like a drivers license and are valid for official identification purposes. Here in VA they cost $10. Some youth sports leagues use them as the only accepted form of identification. If you have to present ID to board a domestic flight, there are cheaper alternatives to the passport.

If I don't have to travel abroad.. travel requiring passports..
I would generally default to the lowest cost generally accepted form of identification..
