Singapore is also a good location for making connections to everywhere on good low cost airlines... you can fly rt to Vietnam for about $75 or the other direction to Bali for $150 or 250 I think. Many direct flights.

Haven't been to BKK since they opened the new airport, but Singapore's is awesome compared to most. Domestic destinations within Thailand are really cheap with 2 or 3 alternatives. But when you fly international some fares get rather high. So you need to decide where you will be traveling the most then think of a central place to connect from. For instance you can't easily fly from Vietnam to Indonesia, but you can easily get to both from Singapore and Delta has a good flight to get you there.... have a great flight.
