A bit of advice. We were in Ireland in July and had a GPS unit added to our rental.

Interestingly, we didn't rely on it in Dublin but it was most useful for navigating smaller roads through villages, etc to get to various destinations. I would recco a GPS if you are planning to be out in the countryside a considerable amount of time.
