Just a few thoughts since I left Caracas a few days ago:

1) I never once felt the least bit unsafe. Never.
2) Locals were incredibly friendly, and very happy to meet tourists
3) I opted to go the safe route and arranged a driver (and exchange) in advance, which worked out perfectly. They even paid my hotel with their debit card and I gave them US$ cash in return.

Fantastic experience, and while I acknowledge the dangers of Caracas, it didn't even blip on my list of most dangerous places I've been.
