I felt the same way when I found FT and welcome to FT.

As to your questions:

1. Impossible to extend beyond the 12 month limit - I have not heard of anyone hacing success.

2. Taking the last flight - your gf's ticket should say on the coupons "Not Valid After 28 December 2003" or something to that effect (for each segment). There is not time on that date. I am almost positive that as long as the segment she wants to book departs before the end of that date her ticket is valid. In your case, because the last date is (in theory) during the flight, it's not like they will ask her to disembark as the a/c crosses the Int Date Line
