I guess rectangular barcodes are approved for paper, and square barcodes are approved for phones, but no-one has approved the use of rectangular barcodes on phones yet... I suppose it's because they want to present phone BPs in a certain way, to make it easy for staff to find what they need, and opening and zooming a PDF doesn't do that.
