Just in case you're wondering, no, there is no other alternative to a car seat. The CARES harness is the only gizmo which has FAA approval.

There's no crotch strap since it can't be secured. One problem I've heard of is the fact the child's legs stick straight out. Probably more an issue with bigger kids.

Anyone know if they got permission or came out with one which goes to a higher weight & height? The usable time frame is quite short but I thought they mentioned on their site that they've asked for it to be "upgraded" for older kids. Parents of special-needs children who found this item to be very helpful, children who were too big for car seats. The FAA was approving them on a case-by-case basis.
