LAX-JFK is 3 class service while LAX-EWR is 2 class service. Definately go LAX-JFK if at all possible, the service and food in first is better.
As for A class availablity, as the date gets closer you chances increase, however AA usually waits till the last minute to release an A class seat. Good luck.
