MrQ and I do this every time we fly together. Sometimes the middle seat is empty, sometimes not. We've never had the middle guy/girl turn down a swap to aisle. (MrQ loves the window, as he sleeps the entire flight.)

Look at it this way: What do you have to lose?

Worst case scenario: Middle seat guy/gal refuses to swap. Unlikely.

OK case scenario: Middle seat guy/gal agrees to swap, and you sit together, one in the middle. But the middle person can lean towards spouse, rather than having to sit bolt upright.

Best case scenario: Middle seat is empty, you both get aisle/window with no one between you.
